Itami OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, June 27

Level 100

We started with a "Money" topic talk exercise and then moved into the book. We went through the questions on p. 28 once more, then students presented their tours and ads in groups. They did a nice job preparing their tour ads, unsurprisingly many of them choosing Hawaii as their destination. To keep to the schedule, I asked them to move on to the next chapter, Unit 6 "World Traveler."

Homework: Please prepare answers to questions 1-7 on p. 33 and be ready to discuss in pairs next week.

Level 200 

We also covered the "Money" warm-up, then students discussed the questions in part 7, p. 36. We finished by reviewing the Vocabulary ex. for Unit 10, on p. 41.

Homework:

Please do the reading on p. 42 and complete part 3 (Active Outline) and part 4 (Comprehension Questions) on pp. 43-44.

Level 300

One more go-round with the "Money" warm-up before getting into the book. We went through the "Extending the Topic" A exercise on p. 40 and started the "Sharing the Ideas" presentations in groups, but ran out of time.

Level 400

We spent the majority of the lesson finishing Lesson 7, and covered everything on pp. 45-47.

Homework: 

Please complete the "Key Concepts" section for Lesson 8, p. 48.

Shukugawa OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, June 20

Class 100

After few minutes catch up, the students presented their ideas for a perfect tour to each other. We went through some errors as a group. We reviewed the vocabulary with a split crossword before finishing with the students describing famous locations around Japan. 

Homework

Please write about a trip abroad. When/where did you go? What did you do? Did you have any problems? How was the trip?

Class 300

We opened with the students discussing the division of housework in their homes. We compared today's norms with those of their parents' generations. The talk moved on to speculating how advances in technology may make housework easier in the future. We had a chat about whether gender is a factor in suitability for particular professions. We finished with a short exercise on house-related idioms (e.g. hitting the roof, plans going out the window).

Please choose one chore and describe how you do it. Try to describe the process as precisely as possible.

Class 200

We spent much of the class doing activities and games on the use of definite and indefinite articles. We checked the homework from last week and went through the reading on p.30, checked for understanding as well as analysing the use of a/the/-.

Homework

Please do the exercises on p.31 and read through the questions in section 7, p.32 for discussion next week.

Class 400

We spent most of our time going through the vocabulary homework from last week both in groups and as a class before reviewing with a split crossword. We had some short discussions along the way as things came up, but we didn't have enough time to get into the main issue (global warming).

Please read p.32 and prepare to discuss the issue as well as how you personally contribute to the problem and/or solution of global warming.

Level 100

Went through Activity I on p. 28, discussing in groups. We then reviewed some of the new vocabulary in Activity II on p. 29, to prep for their homework.
Homework:
Plan a tour by answering questions 1-7 from Activity II, p. 29. Be prepared to discuss the details of your tour with another student next week.

Level 300
Did the Extending the Topic activity A on p. 61. Then, everyone took turns in groups doing their job interview presentations.
Homework:
Please read the two letters that begin Unit 6 (Housework) on p. 30. Please also be prepared to discuss your answers to the "Getting Ready" questions on the same page.

Level 200
We covered pp. 27 -28 and finished up the unit. Lots of good discussion about travel in Japan, plus several questions directed to me about Seattle, etc.
Homework:
Please do 1. Vocabulary Support exercise for Unit 7 (The Secret of Happiness) on p. 29. Also please do the reading on p. 30.

Level 400
After a lengthy discussion warm-up, we finished the unit, pp. 28 and 29. Lots of interesting questions from students.
Homework:
Please do "Key Concepts" and "Words in Context" in Lesson 5, on pp. 30-31.

Itami OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, June 6

Level 100

Started off with a fun "Alphabet Worldwide Names" activity, then per Susette's request, the students got into new pairs and went over Activity 1 on p. 23 one more time. We then reviewed the menu on p. 24 and spent some time doing the Restaurant "Model Conversation" on the same page.

Homework: Please complete Activity III on p. 25: Design a sample menu for your restaurant. Follow the example menu on p. 24. 

Level 200

We did the same warm-up activity as in level 100, then dove into the Discussion Questions from p. 28. That took up pretty much the rest of the lesson (great group discussions, they were excited to chat about travel in Japan). We finished by reviewing the vocabulary on p. 29.

Homework: Do the reading on p. 30 and answer the questions in Parts 3 (Active Outline) and 4 (Comprehension Questions) on p. 31.

Level 300

We started off with a brief discussion about "Home," then moved into the unit about "Housework." Lots of spirited discussion about this topic. We ended on "Extending the Topic," Part A.

Homework:

Extra Activity: Debate on p. 32. Please choose either A or B and prepare 3-4 supporting points for your position. Be prepared to discuss in pairs or groups next week. 

Level 400

We started off with a lengthy discussion about "Laziness," then moved into Lesson 5. We covered the homework from last week, then forged ahead a bit in the unit. The students seem to find the book sufficiently challenging, which is a good thing. Lots of new and difficult vocabulary, especially.

Homework: Please do the "Writing with Idioms," "Word Forms," "Using Key Concepts" and "Vocabulary Expansion" activities on pp. 34-35.

After a bit of small talk, we practiced the role play on page 24. Then in groups had them conceptualize their own restaurant and write a menu. Then made one group be servers and the others customers. Gave the customers roles to play as on page 26. 
HW: read the questions on page 28 and be ready to discuss.

Discuss the Qs from Getting Ready
Read the conversation in pairs and answer the comprehension questions. 
Read, choose and discuss the What Do You Think section.

Went through the book pg 25-27. 
In groups plan a 3 day itinerary in a specified region (Kanto, Kyushu, Shikoku) for a visitor and discuss with members of each region.

Discussed a proverb (from bottom of reading on Life Topics book from other class) as a warmup. 
In groups discuss ways animals help and/or are used by humans.
