Itami OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, July 18

Level 100
We went through a "Cultures Quiz" and then finished up with them going over their summer plans homework with 2 different partners. I reviewed the situations and expressions in the "Travel Woes" section on pp. 35-36.
Homework: Please think of one more travel problem for each of the 4 different situations on pp. 35-36 and review the expressions in the "Useful Language" boxes on those pages.
 Level 200
We spent a big chunk of the class doing a "Summer" discussion exercise, then finished with a dry-run rehearsal of their speeches. I ended up with some advice about presentations.
Homework: Practice (and practice and practice) your presentations!
Level 300

Busy class, finished up chapter 9 Sharing My Ideas p. 45 then went through Unit 10, pp. 46 -48. 
Homework: Please prepare a brief presentation about a personal milestone in your life, either past or future (as explained in the "Sharing My Ideas" section on p.49). Practice and be ready to present to your classmates next week.

Level 400
We spent the majority of the class on a fun "Summer" discussion activity. We closed the lesson talking about next week's presentations. Per the students' request, I expanded their topic range to include various "social problems." 


Homework: Prepare for your Global (or Social) Problems presentation.

Shukugawa OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, July 18

This being the second to last week, I set up presentations for all the classes to do. All classes got a 2-4 minute guideline for the length of their presentations.

100

After some small talk, I passed out a printout (attached here) with their presentation directions and got them started on it.

HW: complete the presentations

A bit of small talk, then we held discussions based on the material from unit 10 about young adults staying dependent on their parents. Then did an idiom pictionary game.

HW: assigned an oral presentation. Talk About An Important Past Milestone, as is shown at the end of the unit.

Did the exercises in the book pg 43-4.

HW: Presentation. Expand on your introduction of your made up country as assigned by Barry the previous week to express more details (use the chapter about Denmark as a guide) and describe what kind of President you will be.

Played the same idiom pictionary game. Showed teh students some brainstorming and outline formats to help with their presentations.


HW: Choose a global issue and present what are the problems and potential solutions. Use reasons and examples to better explain both the problems and solutions.

Shukugawa OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, July 11

Class 100

After a brief catch up chat, the students exchanged clues about different countries with a half crossword exercise. We then checked the homework from last week and made short presentations on our ideal trips. The students then took turns role playing travel problems. We looked at some corrections before finishing up.

Homework

As per the syllabus, I asked the students to review and study vocabulary encountered over the course of the semester.

Class 300

The class discussed their homework and shared ideas on jobs/money. We took a look at a feature from Time magazine on the what the best jobs in the USA are (#1 is audiologist fyi). We discussed possible meanings of money related idioms before checking the answers.

Please read through Unit 10, "Adult Children".

Class 200

We warmed up with a quick catch up chat before doing the same countries crossword activity as used in class 100. We spent some time going through the usage of "too/enough". We then went through the text on Denmark, stopping to discuss agnosticism v atheism, and made comparisons with Japan.

Homework

Please write a short introduction to your fictional country - Welcome to Barryland/ Toshiland/ Norikoland etc...

Class 400

We started off by going through the reading on page 44 and checking the answers from page 42. As usual, there were many questions relating to vocabulary. We had a good discussion on the topic of the evolution of languages. We looked at a Time magazine article on what makes some blended words 'sticky' - cronut, brunch etc. while others, wonut, dunch are less so.

Homework

Please start thinking about topics for your end of semester presentation (a global issue). Isaac will give more information next week.

We finished a great pair practice activity of the 9 original questions from last week. Everyone did a wonderful job. Then we finished page 34 Activity II about pre- planning a trip abroad  in groups. Lots of good ideas and information sharing. 

Homework: Please complete the Review and Reflection on Page 37. Also, Write 6-8 sentences about your summer plans as per the syllabus.

We finished Class discussion questions 1-4. We brainstormed ideas for presentations and Susette gave some advice and hints for what you can do to make a good presentation. I also gave B4 paper to each student to use for their presentations.

Homework: Choose your presentation topic, use at least 5 pictures and write/work on  your presentation.

Good class. Good discussion of the Extending the Topic activity. Long discussions. Lots of different opinions so very good.

Please complete the Sharing My Ideas activity for Unit 9. Also, please prepare for Unit 10 - Adult Children. Read the conversation, do Getting Ready and Check Your Understanding questions.

We Finished up lesson 8. Then had some discussion about gender issues and other topics.

Itami OCC Saturday Classes - Saturday, July 4

100

We stayed on page 33 as the students wrote some really good questions for No.7. 
As such we had 9 more questions which we worked on answering and practising for the remainder of the lesson. Next class please practise again these new questions (9 in total) with a new partner, then commence page 34.

Homework.  
Finish your answers to the 9 new questions we made on page 33.  Next week you will practise once again with a new partner.  Also please complete page 34 Activity II Task 1.

After a lengthy "Money" warm-up, finished going through the questions on p. 33.
Homework: Please complete the 2nd and 3rd travel lists in Activity II, Task 1 - Planning Ahead ("Things to take on your trip" and "Things you want to do on your trip") and be ready to discuss them next week.

After a discussion on Disney banning selfie sticks, the students decided to skip the Body Art unit for now and we jumped to Unit 8, Making Money. We covered pp. 38, 39 and most of 40.
Homework: Please complete Steps 1 and 2 of "Sharing My Ideas" on p. 41. Be prepared to discuss you opinions with another student next week.

We reviewed the various exercises on p. 35 and 36, finishing with Part 7 Class Discussion questions. By popular consensus, much like at Itami, the students decided to skip the UFO chapter and move on to Ch. 10 (about Denmark).
Homework: Please complete the Vocabulary Support section on p. 41.

After the same "Selfie Stick" discussion as in Level 300, we wrapped up Lesson 5, pp. 34-35. Per the syllabus, we skipped ahead to Lesson 7 ("Languages Lost and Found").

Spent a fair bit of time discussing the previous week's homework, then discussed question 1 from unit 6 (pg 33).

Went over their homework, then prepared and went over pg 33 in the book, Sharing My Ideas.

H.W. Invent something that would make housework or daily life around the house better for you or your family. be prepared to explain and discuss.

After checking homework, discussed the basics of online shopping. Also discussed the phrase "The customer is always right". Did the Vocab Support on pg 33.

H.W. Do the reading on pg 34 and prepare any questions you may have.
